Tragedies happen every now and then, but as sad as it is, there is always people who are willing to help in any way they can and artists are not the exception; they use the global attention that is upon them to create awareness, to ask for aid and to raise money for good causes.
People like to follow their idol’s example and they also participate in these charities and spread the voice. These are some of the most important charity concerts ever:
We Are the World
We all have heard this single once (or more) in our lives, but most people do not know the purpose of it. This single was released to raise money to alleviate poverty in Africa and the U.S. Up to this date, it has raised over 100 million dollars in more than 30 years.
These times were difficult ones for farmers, they were facing economic issues due to the high corporate rates. This concert raised 9 million dollars and raised awareness by making the Congress hear their concerns and helping farmers avoid foreclosure. Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp were the singers involved in this movement.
It is one of the biggest benefit concerts ever made. With two stages, one at the Wembley Stadium in London and the other at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, it raised over 245 million dollars to fight famine in Ethiopia. The concert had 162,000 fans in the stadiums and was streamed worldwide on TV with 1.5 billion spectators.
The concert for New York
After the devastating 9/11, Paul McCartney gathered actors, athletes, and artists to honor and pay tribute to all those who died in the terrorist attack alongside with the family members of the victims. They raised over 30 million dollars.
America: A tribute to heroes
In this occasion, George Clooney ran a telethon recorded in Los Angeles, New York, and London with Tom Hanks and Stevie Wonder to raise funds to the families of fallen first responders. They raised over 140 million dollars.
A concert of Hurricane Relief
After Hurricane Katrina, NBC gathered artists around the country in a televised benefit concert to gather funds for families and victims. It raised over 50 million dollars.
Shelter from the Storm: A concert for the Gulf Coast
After the concert for Hurricane Relief, celebrities got together in another televised benefit concert streamed in over 100 countries to gather funds to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. This concert raised over 30 million dollars.
Hope for Haiti now
After a magnitude 7.0 earthquake left most of the country in ruins, artists gathered once more to run a telethon to raise funds for aid and relief to Haiti. Names such as Beyoncé, George Clooney, Rihanna, Wyclef Jean, among others were part of the two-hour event in MTV. The telethon raised more than 61 million dollars.
One Love Manchester
This concert took place after a bombing attack near an Arianna Grande’s concert in Manchester. After the attack she gathered huge artists like Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Coldplay and other to raise funds for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, the British Red Cross and Manchester City Council. It was streamed alive and raised over 3 million dollars.
These are proof that in bad times if people stay together can help a lot more than doing it alone. Use your resources, spread your voice, support the cause and always be grateful for what you have.
